SARDARNI ISHAR KAUR TULI (BEBEJI) SARDAR DIN DAYAL SINGH TULI (LALAJI)
MY TULI FAMILY STORY STARTS FROM MY GRANDFATHER AND GRANDMOTHER
Lala Din Dayal Tuli (MAY 24 1880 - MAY 5 1972) son of Lala Mool Raj Tuli, and Sandarni Ishar Kaur Tuli, who made him Sardar Din Dayal Singh Tuli (Lallaji and Babeji).
Lallaji was born on May 24, 1880 at Jandiala-Sherkhan in Shekhupura District of Punjab now in Pakistan. Lala Mool Raj Tuli, a police officer was once posted as Station House Officer at Kharar near Chandigarh.
Mahtab Rai an uncle of Lallaji was so influenced by Poet Warish Shah belonging to Tuli family village of Jandiala Sherkhan, that he wrote his name in poetry in Tuli Family record in Hardwar when he visited, as: “Banegi Baat Kistere Ke Hai Sub Kaar Ulta, Hum Ulte Baat Ulti Yaar Ulta” reversed says, “Mahtab Rai.”
Lallaji was an outstanding Tunnel Engineer. Among the tunnels he successfully planned and executed are the Banihal Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir and the tunnel for Tata Hydroelectric Scheme near Bombay. Most he worked for Southern Railways and Western Railways as Executive and Superintending Engineer. Was posted in South India and at Lonavla near Bombay. That’s why our family likes South Indian food.
Bebeji was the grand-daughter of the very illustrious General Mian Singh of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and she had strong belief in Sikh faith, great self-confidence, and a Golden Heart. Married in a Hindu family, She followed the Sikh faith and its values with her husband and children who all embraced the Sikh faith.
When Lallaji was in his fifties, he got very ill and had to undergo long treatment. At that time he did the Ardas that when he gets better he will become a Kesdhari Sikh, Got better and became a Kesadhari Sikh.
Lalaji had two younger brothers, Lala Nand Lal Tuli and Lalla Basheshwar Nath Tuli. Bebeji influenced them also and they along with their families became Sikhs. Lala Bisheshar Nath was a Bhagat all his life.
There are several interesting stories about Lallaji and Bebeji for us to enjoy, I’ll narrate later on this page.
After retirement, to settle with family he bought 22 Muraba (225 Hectares) of land in then Bikaner State.
However, family’s affluent life style did not last too long because an unfortunate incident on the land took place which resulted in disruption of education of children and loss of financial security for the family. Jagjit Chachaji and Manmohan Chachaji, the younger of the brothers, could not compete their education.
Family owned two houses in Gujranwala, at Ghanta-ghar (clock-tower) and at Qila Mian Singh Da Adda.
After Partition, the family was in New Delhi. There Bebeji passed away in 1949-50. Lallaji passed away at Chandigarh on May 5th 1972.
